Case Study: Perfecting to the ‘T’ – The Emmbi Way

The Client

Our client is a leading chemicals exporter based in India. With a legacy spanning 125 years, they supply various chemicals for a diverse set of industries like agriculture, textiles, paper, rubber, plastics, pharmaceuticals, consumer products, construction, oil & gas, etc.

With an unwavering “customer-first” approach and undisputed subject matter expertise in the complex world of industrial chemicals, our client is one of the most preferred partners for leading organizations across the globe.

The Business Challenge

Calcium Chloride (CaCl2) is one of the most common chemicals used in various industrial applications. From being used in de-icing mechanisms to prevent ice formation, to being actively used to correct the mineral deficiencies in brewing beer, and more commonly as an electrolyte in sports drinks, Calcium Chloride has innumerable use cases.

Even though Calcium Chloride is not categorized as dangerous cargo, it needs to be handled with utmost precaution as improper handling can be hazardous to human health.

If accidentally ingested, Calcium Chloride can react exothermically with water and can cause burning of the mouth or esophagus. Hence, storing and transporting Calcium Chloride safely is a must. Globally, Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers (FIBCs) are one of the most preferred solutions for packaging Calcium Chloride.

Our client approached us with a specific requirement for FIBCs measuring 90x90x130 cms. During the subsequent trial phases, we faced these challenges:

1. The FIBCs were getting bulgy at the bottom discharge spout, which made storage a clumsy task.

2. The FIBC liners were accumulating at the base of the bags.

3. The Calcium Chloride was choking the top filling spout which hindered fast loading operations.

The Solution

To resolve the aforementioned issues, we devised a three-pronged approach:

1. We redesigned the FIBCs with a petal closure at the bottom. Designed like the four petals of a flower, a petal closure is an effective mechanism to firmly secure the discharge spout at the bottom of FIBCs and prevents the spout from bulging once filled.

The petal closure not only helped prevent accidental discharges from the bottom but also brought in additional firmness to the bottom discharge spout which mitigated bulging.

2. We added liner tabs on the top of the FIBCs to avoid liner accumulation and ensure a flat base to prevent heaping.

3. To resolve the third issue of choking the top filling spout, we again redesigned the FIBCs with a customized dome top to prevent the Calcium Chloride from heaping up.

The Results

1. Optimal Packaging

With a customized dome top, petal closure and liner tabs at the bottom, loading and unloading Calcium Chloride became an easy task that not only saved operational time but also prevented material losses.

2. Space and Cost Optimization

With the earlier conventional bag design, our client was able to transport only 18 FIBCs in a 20’ container. However, with the newly redesigned FIBCs from Emmbi, our client is now able to transport 20 fully filled FIBCs in the same container.

Since 1 filled FIBC is approximately equivalent to 1 ton, our client is now able to transport 20 tons in the same container which has directly helped them reduce their transportation costs by 12 – 12.5%.
